Over the last few weeks, I’ve started to take stock of the things in my life that genuinely bring me joy. So far this year has had it’s ups, but unfortunately it’s had it’s downs too. I rarely get too personal on the blog or on my social media, but the last few weeks have brought some big changes that left me feeling a bit lost, sad & ultimately forced me to focus on the positive things in my life. I feel like it’s a right of passage for someone in their twenties to experience bouts of big change, throw an occasion wobbler, panic about where their life is going, & buckle under the pressure that we put ourselves under through the devil that is comparison. It’s all part of growing up, and I know I’m not the first, and certainly not the last person to experience some or all of what I just mentioned.
I think that the most important thing to remember is the bottom line. The bottom line is, I’m healthy, so are my family & friends, and I’ve got a roof over my head. Unless any of those three facts are compromised, then I know that any problems I have will pass, and everything will be fine in the end. I’m a big believer in everything happening for a reason, it’s a comforting thought when you need it, and it helps when you look for answers on certain things.
So anyway, the point of this post is to share 10 things that made me smile lately. In case you yourself need a new source of smiles, or if you can relate to any of these things that I mention below.
I feel like Dolly came into my life when I needed her the most. It seems a bit creepy to say out loud (or type, in this case) but reading her book, Everything I Know About Love, made me laugh, cry, and it gave me so much perspective. I was also lucky enough to get to see her live in the National Concert Hall in Dublin a few weeks ago too. She’s someone who speaks so open and honestly, and her stories are just so funny and relatable.
‘Songs to Sing in the Car’ Playlist
It’s as if this Spotify playlist was made for me. I swear, it contains all of my favourites! My go-to songs are all oldies so this is the one for you if you’re the same!
My New Office
I genuinely don’t know myself since I recently converted an old storage room in our attic into my home office. It’s taken about 10 weeks at this stage, but fingers crossed, it will be complete by next week! I find that I’m at least 40 times more productive than I was at my kitchen table (no surprises there). It’s also been great to have that dedicated work space to park everything work related when it needs to be parked. I really feel like it’s helping me strike a reasonable work / life balance too.
I couldn’t do this post and not include my beloved prosecco. I don’t even need to explain this one…
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I recently discovered two gorgeous coats from many moons ago in my Mum’s wardrobe. I’m making it my business to give them a new lease of life for the next few years.
A Random Photo of Me Smoking
I don’t know how this came about, or how it came to my attention, but this photo is the crafty-editing work of some random person who I definitely don’t know. It makes me laugh so hard. I’ve never been a smoker in my life, but I even got a bit of a fright when I saw it at a glance first.
I booked my first ever solo trip for next week. I’m heading over to London to see lots of friends, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m well aware that London is a safe bet for a ‘solo trip’, given that every Irish person has at least 20 contacts over there…but it’s all about the baby steps in my opinion!
Having my Friends Home
As of last week, all of my travelling friends are home from the different corners of the world that they were exploring. I definitely felt their absence over the last few months, so it’s great that we can spend the next few weekends (and weekdays) making up for lost time and catch ups. I really don’t know what I would do without them.
For a number of weeks I really couldn’t concentrate on anything other than my thoughts whenever I went for a walk, so I fell about of love with audiobooks & podcasts. I go through phases of being obsessed and I’m certainly in one of those phases now. A few of my favourite’s at the moment include Jo Linehan (perfect for fashion lovers), Caroline Foran (an anxiety focused podcast), Pat Divilly (this one is very inspiring), The High Low (pop culture) & Georgie Crawford (this one is wellness focused).
Ok, so I’m lying. It doesn’t make me smile, it actually makes me throw my hand to my face more times than I can keep track of…but it’s kept me busy over the last few weeks and it’s SO GOOD. I’m aware that I’m about 5 years late to the Homeland party, but if you haven’t watched it yet, get on it!
I really hope that you enjoyed this post. It was really nice to sit down and take stock of a few things that put a smile on my face lately. Have a lovely week!
