How to Get Over Gym Intimidation

Girls, we’ve all been there. We probably are all still there on some level. There is nothing worse than feeling totally out of place or clueless in the gym. Today I put together some of my top tips to overcome gym intimidation or gymtimidatin (if that isn’t a word, then I’m claiming it as my own!). 

Plan out exactly what you are doing

If I go to the gym with no plan in place of what I’m going to be doing, then without fail I will always be less productive and more self conscious. Fail to plan, plan to fail, and all that jazz. It really is so applicable in this scenario.

Meet with a trainer

If you are new to the gym, don’t put yourself through the stress of trying to guess what you should be doing and how. Most gyms offer complimentary training sessions when you first join, so make use of it. If you can get a plan put in place and get familiar with the different machines and their locations then it will make everything less intimidating. 

No eye contact

This is my number one golden rule and I swear it works a charm. If you make it your business to avoid eye contact with everyone at all costs (there are always so many mirrors in gyms) then I promise you won’t feel so self conscious. If you can avoid the awkward moments when you catch eyes with a stranger, then you won’t feel as though someone is judging what or how you’re doing something. Which leads me to my next point…

People are vein

90% of people are in the gym to improve their appearance. Yes health and wellbeing can be a big priority, but at the end of the day, appearance will be on everyone’s list somewhere along the line. You might meet eyes with someone in a mirror but in reality, they were probably checking themselves out first and then probably thought that you were checking them out. Remember everyone is there for the same reason and is probably thinking the exact same as you. 

Avoid peak hours

Nothing will stress you out like the gym at 6.30pm on a weekday. When it’s so busy that people are queuing for machines and treadmills, it’s time to call it a day. Try aim for very early mornings or very late at night. If you have tie at the weekends then try and squeeze in gym time then. You won’t be under as much pressure time wise either.

Feel comfortable in your clothes

This really goes without saying. It’s a classic case of when you look good you feel good, and it’s one less thing to worry about. Remember to always do the squat test too!   

Stick to the back row

One tip that probably seems painfully obvious, but always stick to the back row. Be it the treadmills or the open area where people usually do bodyweight exercises. You’ll feel less self-conscious if you have a clear view of everyone in front of you.
